Beacon Program Update: “Ingenzi K-Light” Cooperative

The Koinonia Foundation Joins with V-Day to Donate                     500 PiSAT Solar Lanterns to Congolese Women

Grand Rapids, Mich., Aug.3, 2009 – Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Koinonia Foundation (www.kfaid.com) recently joined with V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls (www.vday.org), to donate 500 solar-powered K-Light lanterns to women, families, schools and medical centers in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. VDAY: V-Lantern Project Update

In January 2009, the Koinonia Foundation donated 500 K-Lights to V-DAY, Eve Ensler’s organization to end violence worldwide against women and girls. These lanterns went to families around the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Find the blog about it here.

Wall of Words – Update

For last year’s pilot Wall of Words program, we worked with Books for Africa, an organization based out of the United States, to bring thousands of books to Rwanda. June 22: Survivors’ Centre, Kamonyi

Today, we met with a representative of SURF UK to view the Survivors’ Centre in Kamonyi.

This all came about when we contacted Jules Shell of Foundation Rwanda, who connected us with David Russell of SURF, who, in turn, asked us if we would be interested in meeting up with SURF Rwanda coordinator Gabo Wilson to visit the site.

June 19, 2009: Shyara School

It’s about halfway through our trip, and yesterday we trekked out to the Shyara School to check on the solar power system we had installed last year. We also needed to install some special low-power lights in the classrooms and outside the facilities.

When we arrived at the school after a nearly two-hour drive, a large group of students, teachers, and community members gathered to greet us. Read the rest of this entry »

Arriving in Kigali

June 14th, 2009

At noon on June 13, we touched down at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda. We had left our homes on June 11, stayed overnight in Washington, D.C., and then had a 15-hour flight through Rome to Addis Ababa.
